Flipping the Script on Dopamine Sourcing

Choosing to close the hatch on the dopamine received from predictable sources is an option.

Dopamine is the primary driver of motivation to do anything.

What if you inverted the algorithm?

So that the DENIAL of the scrolling, those likes, that coffee, sugar, porn, or any other easy and comfortable habit or vice - becomes the source of dopamine, instead of those things themselves.

Fasting. Turning your phone OFF. Changing business ventures and grinding out something novel where risk is inherent. Focused work. Exercise, cold exposure, saying no. Monotasking. Intensity rather then extensity. Doing anything that is short term uncomfortable or hard or even boring, and teaching your nervous system to recognize that discipline is a reward in and of itself, because it’s beating your own wiring and that of the society you live in.

“I can do hard things.” What’s more emboldening than proving that??

We can flip biological scripts because we have a forebrain.

The limbic friction itself, the refusal to give way or revert, can become the source of dopamine.

Voluntary exposure to pain or fear rewires the nervous system from being challenge-phobic to challenge-philic.

We could live on a constant series of small highs from voluntarily taking on discomforts that make us better, more productive and fulfilled. It’s not a harder road than the "comfortable" one, once you’re on it, and it brings with it none of the damaging side effects.
