“Give to Caesar what is Caesar’s”

Updated: May 16, 2021

There is something to be said for obeying even a corrupt authority, simply as a measure of duty and righteousness.

When Jesus spoke these words, he looked at the coin first, and pointed out Caesar’s image engraved on it. Then he told his followers that yes, they need to pay taxes, because look whose image is on the coin you’re asking about.

Caesar, the state, the government, is in charge of the monetary system. Their products bear their image.

But whose image is borne upon the faces of my children?

“For [they] are made in the image of God.”

Therefore, the government has no say in my treatment of my children, and no, I will not be covering their faces in rags. The government has no say here, and no right to demand the diminishment of the light of our Creator.

They are made in the image of God, so only He gets a say.
